Dr. Nicolas Garel

Psychiatrist

Specialized in the use of psychoactive substances combined with psychotherapeutic approaches for mental illnesses considered resistant to conventional treatments.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the Université de Montréal in 2012, then began medical studies at the same university. He completed his Doctor of Medicine in 2017 and pursued a psychiatry residency at McGill University until 2022. He is currently completing a research fellowship through the Clinician-Scientist Program and a Master of Science in Psychiatry, also at McGill University. In 2023, he will begin a clinical fellowship in addiction medicine at Stanford University in the United States.

He is involved in numerous research projects on the use of psychotropics, including ketamine, in patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression or substance use disorders. He has published many articles in several respected scientific journals. He administered the first psilocybin treatment—an active hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms—in Québec under the Special Access Program. He has also participated in numerous media interviews about the use of psychoactive substances for treating mental health issues.

He regularly presents at national and international scientific conferences. He is also actively involved as a volunteer with various organizations, sharing his expertise in psychiatry, addiction treatment, and the use of psychoactive substances as therapeutic options.

He advocates for an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach rooted in a human and existential perspective. He emphasizes mindfulness and acceptance, with the goal of maximizing human potential to create a rich and meaningful life—while also embracing the inevitable pain that comes with it.

He is passionate about music, literature, gastronomy, and travel. He loves backpacking to explore new countries and cultures. Deeply connected to his family and friends, he makes sure to spend quality time with them regardless of his professional workload. He is the youngest of five siblings and recently became the father of a young son.
